For more than a thousand years it has been the task of the Seannachaidh (tribal historian, bard and poet) to do many things to augment the cohesiveness of the clan and tribe. As the Bard and Seannachaidh of Clan Urquhart I have the obligation of that office to "record the genealogy and achievements of the family and clan, which are handed down from generation to generation."  Without your input and help this cannot be accomplished.

As the Seannachaidh of the Chief of Clan Urquhart, my personal mission is to facilitate a greater understanding and preservation of our rich Celtic and clan ethos, customs, traditions, and history (oral and written), thereby extending the collective knowledge of the clan. In that capacity I'm publishing a book about your ancestors. Please read the Forward by our Clan Chief of the first book in this series. This series of volumes is published by the Sennachie of Clan Urquhart and as such are the only official publications of the genealogy records and achievements of the clan. Each Volume contains a wealth of historic documents, clan history, very old and new photographs, news articles, civil war records, inventions, scholastic achievements, awards and hearaldic information on coats of arms, etc. This series is the most monumental undertaking of the publication of clan history ever, and as such deserves your support.

"Happy is he who remembers his progenitors with pride, who relates with pleasure to the listener the story of their greatness, of their deeds, and, silently rejoicing, sees himself linked to the end of this goodly chain!"  -- Goethe, in "Iphigenia in Taurus."

"There is something extremely narrow-minded and ungrateful in us of the present generation who feel no interest in the lives and acts of our ancestors, through whose agency all of our high and invaluable rights and privileges were compassed and established." -- Taintor.

In today's world, with the clan spread all over the globe, the role of the clansman and also of the chief, and his Bard, has undergone considerable and significant change. We no longer have any sense of belonging to much more than our immediate family, and this has resulted in the chaos and breakdown that we are experiencing in modern society.  I urge each of you to read the message from our chief. Despite our vast geographic separation we owe it to ourselves, and to our children, and to their children, any effort that we can take to preserve our noble heritage. And even if you have no children you owe it to your ancestors to see to it that your story, your history is recorded and preserved. It must start with the preservation of one's immediate history, for this is what is nearest and dearest to all of us. And as we strive to preserve our own stories and photos and poetry, we contribute to the preservation of our clan history as well.

See if your name, or a relatives name is on the lists of known descendants of one of the early Urquharts in America.

Just as the Chief had an important responsibility in maintaining and adjudicating the well-being and prosperity of the clan and extended tribal family so to does the clansman have an equally important responsibility in maintaining and supporting his clan. Those that simply sat by and allowed others to do the work and to foot the bill, had no place in the clan system in ancient times and they have no place in the clan system today. To be part of an ancient and noble family one must act with nobility and responsibility. It is not your birthright to be included simply because you happened to be born with the name. It is something you earn by act and by deed and by responsibility to your heritage. It is something that you teach to your children and to your children's children. This website in not a commercial website.
