The Chief's position as Head of the Name is recognized by the Lord Lyon, the royal official in Scotland responsible for all matters involving clans and hereditary titles related to clans. The Chief's title as Head of the Name is based upon his well-established descent from William de Urchard, 1st Hereditary Chief of Clan Urquhart.
