How we meet the Chief's Criteria

The numbering below matches the Chief's CriteriaItems highlighted in green have been accomplished.

1. The identity of a major branch of a Clan is its heraldic identity. Arms should be acquired for and in memory of James Urquhart of the River Thames. Brian Larry Urquhart is in the process of doing this. The arms should reflect the career and station in life of our founder, James Urquhart. I have suggested that they be Or, on a fess Sable between three boar's head erased Gules, a balance Or. This is referred to as the blazon. A heraldic artist would then render this blazon on parchment and it would look like the shield below. The balance is symbolic of James Urquhart's career as a merchant, Justice of the Peace and Magistrate. Once arms are acquired for and in memory of James Urquhart every descendant bearing the Urquhart name, male and female, could re-matriculate those arms with a suitable difference depicting their place in the family tree. All Urquhart descendants are encouraged to petition Lord Lyon for a differenced version of James Urquhart's Arms.

2. Written proof has been submitted for all descendants in the form of the family history written by Robert Jeffrey Urquhart.

3. James Urquhart died on 16 May 1803, more that 200 years ago and living descendants are at least 5 generations removed from him.

4. We have in excess of 50 adults bearing the name of Urquhart.

5. A copy of our family history has been placed in the Chief’s Archives.

6. Various members of our branch have been functioning as active members of Clan Urquhart for at least ten (10) years; and that, during that period, branch members have been conscious of their relationship to each other; and, as a group, to Clan Urquhart as a whole. Our recent family reunion went far to establish our relationship as a group to Clan Urquhart.

7. We are just getting started on this requirement. Check our progress of members belonging to the Clan Urquhart Association and the Clan Urquhart Foundation. We need the support of ALL DESCENDANTS on this one. You don't have to have the sir-name to join.

8. See the page on Armigers.

9. Time will tell on this one. I think that the success of our family reunion was a big step in the right direction.
